Polvo Test Pattern on WZBC:

Friday August 21, 2009 I did another Test Pattern. This show focused on the group Polvo. Hailing originally from the early 90’s Chapel Hill, NC scene they were an indie-underground/college radio staple of their era. Barely known in major circles Polvo was sorely overlooked. Building on the sound from bands like Sonic Youth and Husker Du they added their own brand of math rock, discordant harmony, experimental guitar tuning and intelligent lyricism. Take the time to get to know this band. Hear selections from their 6 albums and 2 EPs. In early September they will release their first album in 12 years, In Prism. They are back on the Merge label and the record sounds great! Listen to the show here:

Loop Test Pattern on WZBC:

Friday August 14, 2009, I did a one-hour show focusing on spacey, drone rockers, Loop. The band formed in 1986 and disbanded in 1990. Thyey only put out three albums, an LP of outtakes, a live album and an album of Peel Sessions. Their densely layered, guitar driven, hypnotic jams touch on bands such as: Can, Hawkwind, The Stooges, and Deep Purple. The band Spacemen 3 was rumored to have an antagonistic rivalry with Loop. They felt that Loop was stealing their sound. They certainly were mining the same spacey gold. When Loop disbanded half the group became The Hair and Skin Trading Co. and the other half became the experimental, quiet noise group, Main. Loop’s albums have recently been digitally remastered and re-released as double CDs. Consequently, Loop was the last major act I saw at the famous Boston rock club, The Rat. Listen to the show here.

Adrian Borland Test Pattern on WZBC:

Friday April 10, 2009, Martin Sorger and I did a special radio show on WZBC 90.3 FM on the influential singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer, Adrian Borland. He is best known for his work as the front man of the iconic English punk band, The Sound. We also focused on his solo and side projects and posthumous releases. Unfortunately, in 1999 Borland ended his life by throwing himself in front of a train. Despite his critical acclaim and expansive influence, success eluded Borland. Listen to the show for the sound of others inspired by Borland’s music.

Portion Control Test Pattern on WZBC:

On Friday the 27th of March, 2009, at WZBC 90.3 FM my friend Martin and I did a one-hour retrospective on the electro-punk purveyors, Portion Control. The band formed in 1980 at a catering school and went on to be a very influential force on the coming industrial music movement. Thanks to Martin for all his production and encyclopedic knowledge of music. On the show we gave away three copies of their 2008 album, SLUG.

Long Fin Kille Test Pattern on WZBC.

On Friday the 6th of February, 2009, I did a one hour specialty show at WZBC 90.3 FM called Test Pattern. The show focuses on theme and this Friday it was the Scottish band, Long Fin Killie. The band was fronted by Luke Sutherland a multi-talented musician and writer. Talent was the drawback with this band. Despite their beauty, lyricism, musicianship and catchy hooks they never got the ear of the general public. Take a listen to the show and find out what you missed.
